One of the most surprising things for me following the recent NFL draft was the amount of quality, high profile players that went undrafted. Guys like Chris Polk and Chase Minnifield were thought to have been rated as highly as second or third round talents fell of boards due to injuries while others fell due to the sheer depth at their position. Receivers Dwight Jones and Jeff Fuller along with cornerbacks Donnie Fletcher and Leonard Johnson were casualties of this.
High Percentage of Undrafted Free Agents Could Make NFL Rosters
This does mean that there is a pretty good chance for some undrafted free agents to make a team. One of my examples earlier, Chase Minnifield, was picked up by the Redskins. I loved this signing because if he can recover from his knee injury, I have no doubt he makes the team. But there we plenty of other signings that will compete for a spot on the final roster. Other than the guys I've already mentioned; Jacksonville brought in center Michael Brewster, Lucas Nix could challenge for a back up spot along the Raiders offensive line in Oakland, tight end Deangelo Peterson could make a preseason impression for the Rams, while Will Blackwell could make a good understudy to Ryan Kalil in Carolina.
The list goes on. Nearly every team got at least one undrafted guy that could make the team in my opinion. If these guys make the team, it's a huge boost for that team who have no expectations of these guys right now. For a team like my Redskins, who gave up a lot of draft picks to get Robert Griffin III, it would be like having an extra draft pick.
