Lance Berkman Leaves Game With Knee Injury

The Cardinals’ first baseman is likely headed to the DL again.

The Cardinals' Lance Berkman spent time on the disabled list earlier this season with a calf injury; he's played in just 13 games, but has been productive in those games: .333/.429/.571. It appears Berkman might be headed back to the DL after injuring his knee Saturday night in Los Angeles. Jen Langosch:

The injury happened in the second inning, when Berkman made an inning-ending putout at first base. His knee buckled as he came off the base, as Berkman described it, and he fell onto the infield grass after briefly hobbling on his left leg.
After being examined on the field, Berkman was helped into the dugout. When he tried to walk on his own, his knee buckled a second time.
“I didn’t feel a pop,” he said. “[The joint] just kind of slid on me a little bit. That’s the best way I can describe it.”
Berkman limped around the clubhouse postgame still not bending his right knee at all.

The Cardinals took Matt Adams, their top first-base prospect, out of a Triple-A Memphis game Saturday night, so it appears likely Adams will be recalled and Berkman placed on the DL Sunday. He'd be the fourth Cardinal sent to the DL in the last week: Jon Jay (right shoulder sprain), Allen Craig (left hamstring strain) and Kyle McClellan (right elbow strain).are all on the DL, and Carlos Beltran has been slowed by knee soreness, though not placed on the disabled list.

The Cardinals have lost three straight, yet they still sit atop the NL Central, 1½ games ahead of the Reds. Some teams have good luck even when they have bad luck.
