Jason Marquis Officially Designated For Assignment

It’s been a disastrous season for starting pitcher Jason Marquis, and he’s been dropped by the similarly disastrous Minnesota Twins.

Jason Marquis began the 2012 regular season on the bereavement list, after his daughter sustained a serious injury while riding her bike. Her outlook was unclear for a time, but she pulled through, and Marquis re-joined the Minnesota Twins feeling fresh, and having been granted some perspective. Not to make light of things, but one hopes that Jason Marquis still has that perspective in mind. There are much more important things than baseball. There are much more important things than baseball.

In his first real exposure to the American League, Marquis has started seven games for the Twins, and he's allowed 33 runs in 34 innings. All the worse, he's registered 14 walks, three hit batters, and a dozen strikeouts. Marquis has been a disaster, and while he's hardly been the only disaster on the ballclub, he's a 33-year-old journeyman on a one-year contract. This report is not yet official, but if Marquis does get designated for assignment, it won't be a shock. The Twins have little use for him anymore, and Marquis could look to return to the league that's treated him more kindly.

UPDATE

Jason Marquis has officially been DFA’d. To take his roster spot, the Twins have called up 27-year-old Cole DeVries. DeVries has registered 37 strikeouts and seven walks over eight starts in triple-A, but it would be wise to keep expectations low.
