Ryan Sweeney Placed On Concussion Disabled List

Boston Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney gave himself whiplash and a concussion making a diving catch. But what a diving catch it was!

Like a lot of the Boston Red Sox, Ryan Sweeney has been able to hit. Like a lot of the Boston Red Sox, Ryan Sweeney has gotten injured. On Saturday, the Red Sox were visiting the Phillies when Vicente Padilla allowed a fly ball to the gap. Sweeney ranged over and made an absolutely tremendous catch, which you can watch below:

The good news is that Sweeney made the catch, but the bad news is that he hurt himself doing it. He got whiplash, and not too long after, he couldn't pass a concussion test. Now Sweeney has been placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list to make roster room for Kevin Youkilis:

To make room for Youkilis, the team put outfielder Ryan Sweeney (mild concussion) on the newly created seven-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday. Sweeney hasn’t played since Saturday, when he sustained the head injury during a game in Philadelphia.

Initially, Sweeney didn't think he'd have to miss much action, but now he's being given a bit of an extended break. Sweeney is sitting on a .311 batting average and a .784 OPS. He hasn't quite matched Josh Reddick's production in Oakland, but he's been more productive than the Red Sox might've expected him to be. A gifted defender, Sweeney's valuable when he's healthy, which the Red Sox hope he can get back to being soon.
