I decided to have a little fun and do a Sam Hornish Vs Danica Patrick contest. Both former Indy drivers are running full time in the Nationwide Series at the same time this year. Patrick is just starting the leap into Nascar while Hornish is on the comeback trail.
Sam Hornish Vs Danica Patrick: Round One

Now, I know what you are thinking, Sam Hornish has been in Nascar longer then Danica Patrick and should be beating her, while that may be true, Hornish has just 44 Nationwide Starts compared to Patrick’s 36. Hornish however has more Sprint Cup expirence and there is a good deal of difference between the two types of cars.
It also should be noted that two drivers with less starts combined than Patrick has in her career are higher in points than Patrick, and they would be Austin Dillon and Cole Whitt. Dillon actually is above Hornish as well!
Oh and let’s not even talk about which one between Hornish and Patrick gets more air time.
Before you take the jump and see how they match up, how would you judge the battle between these two racers?
Let’s take a look at head to head finishes:
| Daytona | Phoenix | Las Vegas | Bristol | Fontana | Fort Worth | |
| Sam Hornish | 20 | 6 | 9 | 13 | 13 | 11 |
| Danica Patrick | 38 | 21 | 12 | 19 | 35 | 8 |
| Richmond | Talladega | Darlington | Iowa | Charlotte | |
| Sam Hornish | 5 | 12 | 4 | 12 | 9 |
| Danica Patrick | 21 | 13 | 12 | 30 | 13 |
Hornish has finished 10 of the first 11 races ahead of Patrick. Next you could look at Top 5s, Top 10s, and Wins. Well, neither has clocked a win yet. So let’s go with the rest of the stats:
| # | Driver | Wins | Top 5s | Top 10s | H2H Wins | Led | Poles | Avg Start | Avg Fin |
| 12 | Sam Hornish | 0 | 2 | 5 | 10 | 39 | 0 | 9.8 | 10.4 |
| 7 | Danica Patrick | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 15.3 | 20.2 |
(H2H is head to head wins)
In order to be equitable, I decided to do was assign a point value to some of these stats and came up with this:
| Wins | 30 | |
| Top 5s | 10 | |
| Top 10s | 5 | |
| H2H Wins | 2 | |
| Laps Led | 1 | (Per Lap) |
| Poles | 10 |
With the season now 11 races in to 33 total events, we can say Round One of Three goes to ...Sam Hornish Jr.
Here’s how the points looked:
| # | Driver | Points |
| 12 | Sam Hornish | 104 |
| 7 | Danica Patrick | 20 |
We now will enter into Round Two, where Hornish could put away Patrick if he wins this next round. The points are reset as we head to Dover!
