2013 NFL Draft Scouting Reports - Matt Barkley

Getty Images

The past two years I have done reports very similar to this but I never published them. This year, I have decided to publish my scouting reports for the world to see. A draft grade of 90 or above is considered a first round pick and 95 or above is a top 10 pick. One Scouting Report per day will be published on Draft Database at 8AM.

Matt Barkley, QB, USC

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 230

Class: Senior

2011 Stats: 308-446, 3528 yards, 69.1 completion %, 7.91 YPA, 39 TD, 7INT, 8 Sacks

Draft Projection: Top 5

Draft Grade (out of 100) – 95

Player Comparison: Matthew Stafford, QB, Detroit

Strengths:

  • work ethic
  • leadership
  • technique/mechanics
  • ability to read through his progressions
  • accuracy
  • Ability to sell play fakes

Weaknesses:

  • Only average arm strength
  • Does not always put enough zip on intermediate throws
  • Only an average athlete
  • Does not put enough air under deep throws
Final Word: Matt Barkley is a fantastic QB prospect but he is not in the same league as Griffin, Luck, or Newton. He has only average arm strength and needs to improve on deep passes. Despite those concerns, he is a safe pick because of his work ethic and technique. I would say his best fit is in a West Coast offense.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
