Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne will announce his retirement Tuesday, according to reports.
Byrne’s departure follows the news last week that the Texas A&M Board of Regents gave university President R. Bowen Loftin the permission to negotiate Byrne’s departure. Byrne took over as Texas A&M’s athletic director in 2002 and his contract was not set to expire until Aug. 31, 2013.
He will officially announce his retirement Tuesday at a 12:30 p.m. press conference held in the Zone Club at Kyle Field. With his exit, associate athletic director John Thornton is expected to take over the athletic director position on an interim basis.
Byrne has been at Texas A&M since 2002 with previous stops at Nebraska and Oregon. He played an important role in Texas A&M’s departure from the Big 12 and subsequent shift to the SEC.
