Earlier Friday, it was announced that the San Diego Padres would promote top catching prospect Yasmani Grandal to make his major-league debut.
Padres Designate Jeff Suppan For Assignment
The Padres signed Jeff Suppan. He pitched poorly. Now, Jeff Suppan will be looking for work.

At the time, no corresponding roster move was announced. We now know who’s leaving to make room:
#Padres official roster moves: Jeff Suppan is DFA'd, Yasmani Grandal is promoted from Tucson.

Suppan was pulled off the scrap heap by the Padres and made six starts with a 5.28 ERA and more walks than strikeouts. A lot more, in fact (13 walks, seven strikeouts). When he got pounded by the Cubs on Monday, the Padres apparently had seen enough.
San Diego will eventually need another starting pitcher. They recently signed Jason Marquis, who is expected to make some starts at Triple-A Tucson before returning to the major leagues, so maybe he's the Padres' next guy.
Or could they have their eye on Jamie Moyer? Pure speculation, of course, but Moyer might do well in the vast expanses of Petco Park. Stay tuned.’
