USTA Will Spend $500 Million On National Tennis Center Upgrades

The New York Times reports that the United States Tennis Association will plug $500 million into upgrades for the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which hosts, the U.S. Open. You know, in case you were wondering where all that profit (that doesn’t end up in the hands of players) goes.

↵Among the improvements:

  • ↵↵A new, expanded Louis Armstrong Stadium that seats 15,000.
  • ↵↵↵A new grandstand that seats 8,000.
  • ↵↵↵A “double-deck viewing area for fans to watch players practice during the United States Open.”

↵↵Tennis as a sport doesn’t appear as popular in the United States as it was when Americans like John McEnroe, Chris Evert, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi were thriving in the 1970s-1990s. But the U.S. Open itself is pretty big business, and it’s about to get bigger, apparently.
