First Word: Logan Thomas is not Cam Newton. Not yet, at least. Many have been comparing the Virginia Tech quarterback to Newton, who possessed a similar build and skill set and was draft first overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. Thomas is talented, though. There’s no doubting that. He has a huge arm and can make plays with his feet. He has shown solid accuracy on his deep and intermediate passes. But he is not without flaws. He needs to improve on working through his reads and has played primarily in the shotgun during his career. Considering he entered college as a tight end prospect, Thomas has tons of upside. It will be interesting to watch his continued development this season.
Strengths
- Size. Thomas stands at 6-feet-6-inches tall and weighs 260 plus pounds, which allows his to see over the defense and be a punishing ball carrier.
- Thomas' mobility is an asset. He can make plays with his legs, which keeps the defense honest. He also has great vision as a ball carrier.
- Thomas might have the best arm in the 2013 class. He can make all of the throws.
- Deep and intermediate accuracy are not issues for Thomas. He delivers a very catchable pass and seems to almost get more accurate the deeper he throws.
- Due to his size, Thomas has solid pocket presence. He is willing to stand in and take a hit.
- Thomas has a smooth, efficient and effortless release. He has a high release point and rarely has passes knocked down at the line.
Weaknesses
- At times, Thomas would lock into one receiver and not go through his progressions. It would be great to see him develop this part of his game next season.
- Thomas struggled with ball security a bit last season.
- Not sure if it's Virginia Tech's offense or Thomas not going through reads, but he needs to keep his eyes downfield a bit. He is a great deep passer, I just want to see him develop that killer instinct and confidence to go after the deep part of the field with consistency.
