2012 College World Series: UCLA Dispatches Stony Brook, 9-1

Thanks in part to a five-run first inning, the UCLA Bruins opened College World Series play with a 9-1 win against Stony Brook.

The Bruins batted around the order in the first inning, racking up five runs on five hits. UCLA starting pitcher Adam Plutko pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out seven batters. Beau Amaral and Kevin Kramer both recorded two hits for the Bruins, while Jeff Gelalich, Pat Valaika and Kevin Williams each drove in two runs.

Stony Brook is the only No. 4 seed to reach the College World Series this year but, if they are going to advance, they will now have to win four straight games. Stony Brook starting pitcher Tyler Johnson lasted just 2.1 innings and allowed seven of UCLA’s nine runs.

UCLA will face the winner of the game between Arizona and Florida State while Stony Brook will face the loser of that contest in an elimination game.
