2012 College World Series: On FSU’s ‘Phenomenal’ Pitching, And More

The Florida State Seminoles take on the UCLA Bruins on Tuesday night in the College World Series, with one team moving on to face Arizona and another heading home. With both teams down to their third starters, the bullpens might get a workout, while both coaches will be expecting plenty of offense from their bats.

SB Nation’s Florida State Seminoles blog, Tomahawk Nation, got a chance to talk to ESPN lead college baseball analyst Kyle Peterson, who praised the FSU hitters and their ability to produce runs in bunches, even with less powerful bats and a bigger park than in previous years in Omaha.

“I like their offensive approach. Even with Game 1, it’s been pretty good,” Peterson said. “Not many teams can score runs in bunches. But they put ‘em up bang, bang, bang and it’s over. Not many teams have that quick strike ability,” he added. Peterson mentioned that with the new bats and the dimensions in Omaha, many teams play for a single run, but FSU has the ability to score in multiples.

Peterson also had praise for Florida State’s pitching coach and freshman pitchers, who threw the first two games in Omaha.

“Phenomenal. I know him from his Oklahoma days,” Peterson said of Florida State’s new pitching coach Mike Bell. “It takes guts to throw two freshman. You have to commit to it.”

Scott Sitz takes the mount for the Seminoles, and Zack Weiss will be pitching for UCLA. The game gets underway from TD Ameritrade Stadium in Omaha at 8 p.m. EDT.
