2012 College World Series: FSU’s John Holland Arrested For Shoplifting

For many players, making it to the College World Series in Omaha is a dream come true. For one player on the Florida St. Seminoles, though, the trip has quickly turned into a nightmare, as a foolish attempt at price-swapping led to an arrest and may have put his baseball future in jeopardy.

Rachel George and Coley Harvey of the Orlando Sentinel reported on Tuesday that John Holland, a freshman with the Seminoles, was arrested on Tuesday.

Holland, 19 and his brother, Steven Holland, 23, were released from jail on Tuesday morning and paid a $50 fine for damaging property. The two were arrested Monday afternoon after changing the price tag on a pair of Nike Dri Fit shorts to one from a clearance pair of shorts at Scheels, a sporting goods store.

City Prosecutor Marty Conboy said the price difference was $12.01.

Both spent the night in jail because of their lack of ties to the community, Conboy said. After each posted $350 in bail, they plead guilty to damaging property and paid the fine.

FSU head coach Mike Martin called the incident “an error in judgment” and stated that Holland has been suspended indefinitely from the team as a result. Florida State will play the UCLA Bruins in an elimination game on Tuesday night, but will do so without Holland, who was 1-for-6 in two games in Omaha.
