Jose Contreras Out For The Year With Torn Elbow Ligament And Tendon

Phillies reliever Jose Contreras is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing his ulnar collateral ligament and flexor pronator tendon in his right elbow. He suffered the injuries while pitching in Friday's game, and the team announced the severity after he underwent an MRI on Saturday morning.

“Unfortunately we’re pretty confident he’s got a couple very, very serious issues,” Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “I feel badly for him. He worked pretty hard to get back to the point where he started to be pretty effective. It’s a tough piece of news to take.”

Contreras, 40, appeared in just 17 games during an injury-plagued 2011, eventually undergoing surgery on his flexor pronator tendon last September. He’s expected to get a second opinion on his current injury from Dr. Lewis Yocum, who performed the previous operation.

Contreras pitched just 13.2 innings this year, allowing a 5.27 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. He’s officially been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
