On a 94-degree, windy afternoon in New York City, the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves combined for nine home runs in a 10-5 Braves win over the Bronx Bombers. It was the Braves, though, who wore the "Bombers" nickname for the day, as they hit five home runs to the New Yorkers' four.

The nine total homers is a record for the new Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009. The previous record of eight was set April 18, 2009 in a game between the Yankees and Indians and tied September 24, 2010 in a game between the Yankees and Red Sox.

The nine home runs were hit by Jason Heyward (who had two), Freddie Freeman, Martin Prado and David Ross for the Braves, and Derek Jeter, Eric Chavez, Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez. For A-Rod, it was the 640th round-tripper of his career, putting him 20 behind Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time list.

Why did this happen? Amy Freeze, meteorologist for WABC-TV in New York City, posted this on her Facebook page:

Higher temperature means lower air density which means less drag. In Baseball, an extra 10 degrees F in temperature might be worth about 4’-5’ on a long fly ball.In case you aren’t familiar with Amy, yes, she really is a TV weather person and yes, it is her real last name.
