Tour de France 2012: Jens Voigt’s 15th Tour Likely His Last

German cyclist Jens Voigt says this, his 15th Tour de France, may very well be his last.

When the first stage gets under way in the 2012 Tour de France, German cyclist Jens Voigt will set a record for his country for most times participating in the race.

In this, his 15th time in Le Grande Boucle, Voigt told the German media Wednesday that this is likely the last time he competes in the sport’s biggest annual race.

“I think this is my last Tour,” the 40-year-old told the DAPD.“ After all, that is a good 4,000 kilometers around France, and it doesn’t get any easier.”

Voigt continued to say that it’s not so much the number of Tour de Frances that he races in that makes him proud, but the respect he’s earned from his peers and teammates over the years, who are constantly looking to have him be part of a team, that keeps him going.

As a member of the RadioShack team, Voigt will race under a dark cloud of doping allegations by the United States Anti-Doping Agency against the team’s manager, Johan Bruyneel.

Voigt is a three-time stage winner of the Tour de France.
