First Word: Keenan Allen has overcome inconsistent quarterback play throughout his career to establish himself as one of the elite wide receiver prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft. Allen’s skill set stacks up to the best wideouts in this class, including Robert Woods. And he also possesses an ideal frame for the position. Among his best traits are his incredible body control, smooth route running and speed. Allen is a dangerous playmaker with the ball in his hands and has impressive numbers considering his quarterback situation.
Strengths:
- Allen is a physical receiver who attacks the football well. Combine this with his leaping ability, and there are very few jump balls that he doesn't win. His skill set makes him an effective target in the red zone.
- Allen's speed and agility make him a smooth route runner against all types of coverage. He is particularly adept at finding the soft spot in zone coverage.
- Despite Cal's shortcomings at quarterback, Allen manages to be a consistent deep threat, using his speed, hands and strength to come down with passes down the field.
- Allen's body control is about as good as it gets. He consistently makes adjustments on poorly thrown balls and never quits on a play. He has a huge catch radius.
Weaknesses:
- Allen's hands are far from a weakness, but I did notice a few instances where he dropped some easy passes, particularly on plays over the middle. This is a nit-picky area for him to improve on in his junior season.
