Rays outfielder Matt Joyce, who was an American League All-Star in 2011, is having a solid season, hitting .279/.387/.512 with 11 home runs in 201 at-bats. But he was removed from Tuesday's game against the Nationals with some back pain, and it's gotten too bad for him to continue playing. He's been placed on the 15-day disabled list, and Marc Topkin reports on other Rays roster moves:

The Rays also made a flurry of other roster moves on Friday.


The Rays made a series of moves today, topped by Joel Peralta dropping the appeal of his suspension and All-Star OF Matt Joyce going on the DL.
Also INF Brooks Conrad, claimed on waivers yestersday, was added to the roster; INF Jeff Keppinger was activated off the DL and RHP Brandon Gomes was called up.
OF Rich Thompson was optioned to AAA and INF Drew Sutton designated for assignment.
Despite all this turmoil, the Rays begin Friday just 3½ games behind the first-place Yankees in the AL East.
