First Word: Tyler Wilson will be the quarterback prospect to watch next fall. Wilson burst onto the scene as a junior, replacing Ryan Mallett in Bobby Petrino's offense. Surrounded by three talented wide receivers, Wilson put up impressive numbers, leading the Razorbacks to an 11-2 record. But all three receivers are gone, and coach Petrino has been fired. It's all on Wilson now, and he'll have to rise to the occasion to be a top ten pick. He has a big arm and showed decent accuracy at times, but his ball placement was definitely inconsistent. Wilson is more than willing to take a hit, but his feel for pressure needs to improve next season. He forced himself to make a lot of off balance throws, but his athleticism and ability to throw on the run allowed him to make effective throws from weird angles and body positions. He is far from a finished product, but the first round potential is there.
Positives:
- Wilson’s size and arm strength are both more than adequate for the NFL. He delivers the ball with a ton of zip and has a smooth release.
- Wilson is a tough, competitive kid. He is willing to take a hit to deliver a throw and is always willing to tuck the ball away and pick up some yards on his own.
- Stands tall in the pocket and is willing to take a hit. Has developed a solid understanding of Bobby Petrino’s offense.
- Puts great touch on passes when necessary. Throws a nice ball.
- Throws well on the run and from a lot of different body angles and positions. Can adjust his release to make accurate throws under pressure.
Negatives:
- Wilson’s accuracy is inconsistent. He was bailed out by his receivers a ton last season. He can be erratic when throwing across his body at times.
- His feel for the rush is not excellent. He does not position himself to make the best throw while avoiding the rush. As mentioned, he has an uncanny ability to make some throws off his back foot, on the move and from weird angles. But he would be better served to not force himself into those positions.
- Makes poor decisions with the football on occasion. Threw some boneheaded picks that should have been thrown away and tried to squeeze too many balls into double coverage.
- Played poorly in two of Arkansas’ biggest games (LSU and Alabama). Needs to prove he can rise to the occasion under pressure.
- Wilson is losing his top three receivers and head coach. He will have to prove that he can be the man for Arkansas’ offense. Huge test for him this year.
