College World Series 2012: Arizona Brings Firepower To The Plate

The Arizona Wildcats and the South Carolina Gamecocks are set to square off in Game 1 of the 2012 College World Series Championship Finals on Sunday. Both teams sport impressive resumes, but the Wildcats are the hotter team, having gone undefeated throughout the tournament. They have their impressive offense to thank, as the SB Nation blog Garnet and Black Attack points out:

The Wildcats hit the ball extremely well. They rank fourth in the country in BA at .330. A shocking seven of the batters in their regular rotation are hitting over .300, with an eighth at .297. They also rank fifth in the country in runs scored and 14th in slugging percentage. Johnny Field, their leadoff guy, is hitting .373 for 47th in the nation and he’s seventh in the nation in runs scored with 70. Robert Refsnyder, the cleanup guy, has batted in 64 runs, good for 20th in the nation. SS Alex Mejia is hitting .361; he won Pac-12 POY, partially on the strength of his stellar fielding.

The Wildcats are coming off a 10-3 win over Florida State in which they put up six runs in the first inning alone and recorded 15 hits as a team off eight different pitchers. They will need their offense to come through. While Kurt Heyer is 13-2 with a 2.24 ERA this season, no other Arizona starter is pitching sub-4.00.
