2012 College World Series, South Carolina Vs. Arizona Score: Wildcats Take Game One, 5-1

The first game of the best-of-three championship series in the College World Series was all Arizona, as the Wildcats put two-time defending champion South Carolina on the brink of elimination with a 5-1 victory on Sunday night.

Arizona starter Konner Wade threw his second consecutive complete game in Omaha. The 6’3 right-hander gave up only six hits and one earned run in 8 innings.

The only time the Gamecocks were able to get much going against Wade, they ran themselves right out of the inning. Adam Matthews was gunned down by Robert Refsnyder, a fifth-round pick of the New York Yankees, trying to go from first to third on a single with no outs in the seventh.

Refsnyder had the biggest at-bat of the game as well, a rare opposite field two-run homer in the bottom of the first that gave Wade a lead he would never relinquish.

South Carolina, saving its best two starters for a possible Games 2 and 3, didn’t get much from starter Forrest Kousmas, who only made it through 2.1 innings while allowing four hits and three earned runs.
