2012 College World Series: Arizona, South Carolina Nearly Score, Still Tied At 1 Through 8 Innings

Through eight in Omaha, Arizona and South Carolina are knotted with Arizona needing a run to win the College World Series and South Carolina needing a run to stay alive for a potential Game 3.

A base knock by Trent Gilbert to start the eighth off of Matt Price came to nothing, even after an error on a routine ground ball to the left side of the infield advanced Gilbert to third, as Price retired the side without allowing a run to score.

In the bottom, James Farris plunked the first batter, Grayson Greiner, and Arizona manager Ray Tanner, knowing how important a run was, had Chase Vergason try to bunt him to second. But a phenomenal play by Seth Mejias-Brean to charge and whip the ball to second nailed the lead runner. But the aggressive fielding didn’t pay off, as an opportunity for a strike-em-out, throw-em-out opportunity saw the throw sail into center field and put Vergason 90 feet from home. That chased Farris -- who had only allowed two hits on the evening -- in a rare dip into the bullpen for Arizona skipper Andy Lopez. Matthew Troupe got South Carolina’s Joey Pankake looking on a full-count pitch on the corner to send the game scoreless into the ninth.
