Summary
Let me warn you, if you do intend to watch some Miami games, be aware that they will play a quarterback. And there’s a good chance that even if you live in London (England, not Kentucky) , somehow you will intercept a pass from your couch. You have been warned.
That being said, there's plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, even if that offensive prospect list seems short. As always, Miami recruits better than nearly anyone, being that they exist in the state of Florida which produces quite a few good football players. So there's likely a sophomore or freshman that will bust out who I haven't listed (Randy Johnson?).
Key games
Notre Dame (away) - Week 6 (Sat., Oct. 6 - 7:30 p.m. ET, TBD)
Miami and Notre Dame. Two historic programs who can’t seem to find a head coach befitting their past successes. Two teams that can’t seem to right the ship. It’s not as if it’s been that long. Six years ago, Notre Dame started the season ranked #2 overall. Sure, they’d fall to the deep teens, but it was a talented team. Meanwhile, from 2000-2003, Butch Davis (for a season) and Larry Coker (for the next three) had the Hurricanes in the national championship mix annually.
So with that kind of recent tradition, and recent disappointment, this is a throwback game that could define either’s season.
South Florida (home) - Week 12 (Sat., Nov. 17 - TBD)
You’ll notice I talk about recruiting quite a bit. There’s a reason. It matters.
And while USF hasn’t blown up the recruiting trail under Skip Holtz, now entering his third year as HC, it took him a couple years to build his team at East Carolina. If he can get a couple key wins throughout this season (this game being a candidate), don’t be surprised if USF starts piling up big recruiting lands, especially if they can get Asiantii Woulard to stick to his commitment.
Key matchups
SS Vaughn Telemaque v. Ga. Tech rushing attack, Week 4 - Sat., Sept. 22
As the strong safety, Telemaque is going to be of prime importance here. On the road with this regional game (Miami pulls about two recruits from the state of Georgia), the U would do well to pull out a win and not just because it’s a divisional game.
Miami’s next five games look like this - v. NC State, @ Notre Dame, v. UNC, v. Florida St., v. Va. Tech. That’s a hell of a five game run. Losing this would put Miami in a hell of a bind. Winning it would put them on a platform to get out of that stretch with perhaps a couple of wins if not more.
DE Anthony Chickillo v. Virginia OT Oday Aboushi, Week 11 - Sat., Nov. 10
The young natural talent versus the polished technician, this is a 1v1 every draftnik needs to have scheduled with pen, not pencil. Aboushi’s a top 10 OT prospect for the 2013 NFL Draft at this point, and could rise (as one handsome gentleman once suggested).
Chickillo, on the other hand, was highly rated out of HS -- the 3rd DE nationally according to Rivals, 5th according to Scouts, Inc. And he certainly didn’t disappoint in 2011, production-wise. Now beyond the veneer of his freshman year, Chickillo will need to assume a role that comes with expectations in 2012. Week 11 should be a good test of that assumption.
