Cubs Designate Randy Wells For Assignment

Randy Wells finished sixth in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2009, but now, he could be out of a major league job.

In 2009, Randy Wells finished sixth in National League Rookie of the Year voting with a solid 3.05 ERA and 1.276 WHIP. Even though he was a bit advanced in age for a rookie that year (26), it appeared the Cubs had a solid No. 3 or No. 4 starter for years to come.

Three years and some demotions and injuries later, the Cubs are apparently finished with Wells:

Wells wasn't given much of a chance to make the Cubs' rotation this season and began the year at Triple-A Iowa. On his recall, he began walking way too many hitters. The last straw might have come Tuesday night, when he walked Mets pitcher Dillon Gee when Gee was attempting to lay down a sacrifice bunt. In all, Wells walked 24 hitters in 28⅔ innings this season.

Rafael Dolis, recalled in place of Wells, will join the Cubs' bullpen; the Cubs have an off day Thursday and so will likely simply skip Wells' next turn in the rotation while they figure out how to replace him.
