Nationals Add Mike Gonzalez To Bullpen

The Nats have been going through relievers very quickly this year. Now they have another one to try.

The Washington Nationals have had more than their share of bullpen woes this season. Closer Drew Storen is out until around the All-Star break. Brad Lidge made a few appearances, posted two saves, then went down with an injury. Henry Rodriguez saved nine games, but also got hit hard, was demoted from closer, and is also injured.

Right now the Nats are using Tyler Clippard as their closer, but he'd probably be more useful to the team in his normal role as setup man. So, the Nats Sunday made this roster move:

Gonzalez has closing experience; he posted 24 saves for the 2006 Pirates and also closed some games for the Braves in 2008 and 2009. He's now 34 and wasn't all that good in a 2011 season split between the Rangers and Orioles, and made just one Triple-A appearance at Syracuse, striking out two of the four batters he faced. Guess the Nats figure that's enough.
