2012 Olympic Swimming Trials: Michael Phelps Wins 100M Butterfly

A dramatic kick allowed Phelps to recover from a slow start and continue racking up first-place finishes.

The 100 meter butterfly has always been one of the more difficult races for Michael Phelps, and when he got off to a slow start in the final race, it looked like he might be mortal after all.

However, on the kick, Phelps raced past his competition as he stayed underwater for what seemed like an eternity, which allowed him to hold off Tyler McGill, who earned a berth on the Olympic team with a second-place finish.

Phelps’ time of 51.14 was the fastest in the world this year, while McGill’s time of 51.32 was the second.

Ryan Lochte narrowly missed qualifying for yet another individual race himself, coming in third at 51.65, which was the fourth-fastest time in the world this year.
