Dillon Gee Having Second Blood Clot Surgery; Could Be Out For 2012

After Mets starter Dillon Gee had a procedure performed on a blood clot in his right shoulder, doctors told him he could either have a second surgery to end this issue once and for all, or go on blood thinners, according to ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin.

The choice was fairly easy:

New York Mets right-hander Dillon Gee will undergo potentially season-ending surgery Friday in St. Louis to fix artery damage in his pitching shoulder, which should prevent a recurrence of clotting, a source familiar with the plan told ESPNNewYork.com on Wednesday.

Gee is expected to be able to resume throwing in six to eight weeks. But under the best-case scenario, he only would return in late September, or in October if the Mets reach the playoffs. The source, however, said that is secondary to getting Gee ready for the 2013 season.

The Mets, for the time being, will have Miguel Batista take Gee’s spot in the rotation, and will recall lefthanded reliever Josh Edgin from Triple-A Buffalo to take Gee’s roster spot, according to the team’s website.
