It's been quite the few months for 49ers wide receiver A.J. Jenkins. San Francisco made him a first round pick much to the surprise of draftniks everywhere. But now, reports are that Jenkins hasn't been in the best shape and has an uphill battle to climb the depth chart.

Rather than get a chance to prove himself in year one, Jenkins may be doing more watching than playing during his rookie season. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area opined in a recent mailbag that Jenkins may not even dress for every game this season with Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham in place as the team's top three receivers. The team wants to judge Jenkins on his entire four-year rookie contract.
Maiocco added that 49ers fans shouldn’t expect much out of their rookie class, except when it comes to LaMichael James. He said james should have some sort of role on offense, but it wouldn’t be huge.
Contributions from rookies may not be as crucial for the 49ers after the team broke out with 13 wins last season. They have a strong core in place, and with the additions the team made in free agency, they can afford to have a few “jars on the shelf,” so to speak.
