David Ortíz Sets Record, Gets Hurt
Monday night in Boston, David Ortiz broke an old Red Sox record, but is also going to miss at least a few games after suffering a heel injury, with an MRI next on the agenda.
With a single and a walk, Ortíz became the first Red Sox player with at least one hit and one walk in 10 straight games; the old record was held by Ted Williams (who had two nine-game streaks) and an obscure fellow named (fittingly enough) Bob Johnson.
Later in the game, Ortíz might have helped set another franchise record, this one not quite so enviable:

Because in the eighth inning, Ortíz was on first base when Adrian Gonzalez launched a home run over the Green Monster, and while rounding second base, Ortíz injured his heel. He did manage to circle the bases, but gingerly. How bad is it? Here's reporter Gordon Edes (via ESPN Boston):
“This (expletive) team is cursed,” Ortiz said humorlessly as he limped toward the showers, his mood darkened by the knowledge that he will undergo an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.
Ortiz left Fenway Park without the aid of crutches and was hopeful that the injury was not serious.
“I got sore,” he said, “But I didn’t hear any pop. That’s a good sign. We’ll see. We’ll know more tomorrow. I think I’ll be all right.”
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine agreed, stating that he didn’t think Ortiz would miss more than a few days.
If Ortíz does go on the Disabled List, he’ll be the 22nd Red Sox player this year.
No, we don't know what the record is. And it's not like the Red Sox weren't devastated by injuries in other seasons; 2010, in particular. But sometimes the Sox do seem cursed, and this one seems particularly tough, considering the Sox just got Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford back into their lineup.
