Major-league dugouts have railings and screens on them. Part of the reason for that is to protect the players and coaches in the dugout from foul balls.
Brett Lawrie Falls Into Dugout, Leaves Game
The Blue Jays’ Brett Lawrie suffered what appeared to be a serious injury when he fell into a dugout at Yankee Stadium, but fortunately, he only has a calf bruise.

And the other reason is to try to prevent things like this from happening:

That's Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie, falling over the railing into the third-base dugout at Yankee Stadium Wednesday afternoon. Canadian Press:
Lawrie was chasing a shallow Mark Teixeira popup in the bottom of the third inning. He tumbled over a railing while reaching for the ball and took a long fall into the television camera pit near the Toronto dugout and appeared to hit his right leg on a metal railing as he fell.
Lawrie was in obvious pain when he got up and was escorted to the clubhouse by manager John Farrell.
Fortunately for the Blue Jays (especially with all the injuries they’ve already had) and Lawrie, this doesn’t appear to be serious:
The Blue Jays say Brett Lawrie is day-to-day with a right calf contusion.

Omar Vizquel moved from shortstop to third base and Yunel Escobar took over at shortstop after Lawrie left the game.
