2012 Program Preview - Virginia

Hey, what’s up guys. Owen Van Arsdale, here.

As part of the Lacrosse Outreach Program Project for Youths to Sports that Aren’t as Cool (LOPPY SAC), I’m here to introduce you to the 2012 Virginia Cavalier football team. Bros, these guys are serious. They can run. They can hit. I mean, I was talking to Winston last week and right before Dilfred came over, we couldn’t believe how athletic these guy fries were. If they were in the mall, they’d be in the Dude Court. Get it? Food court, Bro Schembechler!

Wyatt and Fatt Matty said I should focus on these guys. But think, if these guys just tried to cracks their lax for like one week, holy Toaster Strudel, bro.

So...yeah! Check out Virginia football when you’re not chillin with us at Bros Lacrosse (author’s note: that is an actual place and likely NSFW). On behalf of myself and Steele Stanwick, bro up and Go Hoos, bro! BRO!

(another author’s note: despite the fact that both Owen Van Arsdale and Steele Stanwick are actual players on the UVA lacrosse team, this was satirical in nature. Also, I’m not entirely sure that the UVA lacrosse site didn’t make up those names themselves for the same purpose.)

After the jump, the prospects worth noting as well as some games and matchups to pencil into your calendar.

Summary

Alright, so normal 3k time; Owen had to go bro it up.

On the surface, it’s Aboushi and a handful of late day 3 guys. Given Mike London’s rise through the coaching ranks (and the improvement in recrruiting), I’d be hesitant to write Virginia off of your scouting map. Nicholson was a huge land for the Cavaliers in recruiting and didn’t disappoint in year one. If London can demonstrate that last year’s 8-5 record and Chick-Fil-A Bowl wasn’t a fluke, Virginia could well be on it’s way to competing in the Coastal Division annually and perhaps the ACC as a whole.

(NOTE: I know some experts are high on TE Colter Phillips, but I base my evaluations on tape, not potential. So while he's definitely got NFL size and the Heath Miller comps speak well to his value as a prospect, his tape's been underwhelming, injuries and all.)

Key games

Penn St. (home) - Week 2 (Sat., Sept. 8 - 12:00 p.m. ET, ABC)

After Virginia opens up against London’s former employer, the Richmond Spiders, this out-of-conference matchup should be a good contest between two programs at very, very, (continue to insert enough very’s to the point we don’t have to talk about Penn St. stuff here) different points in their histories. And with both programs competing for some key recruits this year (Robert Foster -- #2 WR per Scouts & #4 per Rivals, Alex Anzalone -- #5 OLB per Scouts & #7 per Rivals, David Williams -- #12 RB per Scouts & #19 per Rivals, and Tyler Boyd -- #16 ATH per Scouts & #29 WR per Rivals), this game could have repercussions beyond their respective records.

All conference play except for Virginia Tech in week 13

No, this isn’t a cop out. But looking at the Cavs schedule, it’s very possible they could go 7-1 in ACC play, the lone loss coming against a superior Hokies team to close out the regular season.

Sure, the early away game against Georgia Tech won’t be easy; and yes, the five-game run starting in week seven against Maryland will challenge Virginia week in, week out. But like the Cavs, those aren’t top 25 teams. If the Cavs do get through that stretch unscathed, however, they will be.

Key matchups

QB Michael Rocco v. Georgia Tech CBs Rod Sweeting & Louis Young, Week 3 - Sat., Sept. 15

Rocco did a decent job in year one as the Cavs’ starter. Going into this year, with a trio of undersized but quick sophomore targets, Rocco will have to cut down on the turnovers. Against stronger competition, his Florida State game last year is the blueprint - 22/31 for just 238 yards, with a TD but no INTs. It’s no coincidence the Cavaliers won that game...

OT Oday Aboushi v. Virginia Tech DE James Gayle, Week 13 - Sat., Nov. 24

While all indications portend a contest more like last year's 38-0 blowout Tech win than a close game, this matchup is key for NFL scouting. Gayle's a solid day 2 candidate at this point while Aboushi's stock is somewhere between late round 1 and early round 3. This could be much like the 2010 contests between then Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi and Iowa DE Adrian Clayborn or last year's Ricky Wagner-Dion Jordan faceoff in the Rose Bowl.
