Remember Sam Fuld?

In 2011 he was diving for baseballs all over American League yards, hitting .350/.411/.525 in his first 21 games, and becoming so popular in Tampa Bay that they held Sam Fuld “Superhero Cape Day” at the Trop.

The rest of 2011? Not so great. Fuld finished with .240/.313/.360 numbers in 103 games for an OPS+ of 92, not bad for a fourth outfielder. But he suffered a wrist injury during spring training and had surgery, spending all year on the DL. Until now. Marc Topkin:

The Rays officially activated OF Sam Fuld from the disabled list, and he will make his season debut tonight starting in left against the Orioles.

Fuld, out since right wrist surgery the last week of spring training, is expected to serve as the Rays fourth outfielder/pinch-hitter. To make room on the 40-man roster, 3B Evan Longoria (partially torn left hamstring) was transferred to the 60-day DL.

The Rays, still in the AL wild-card scrum, can use Fuld’s defense and speed in the outfield, though no superhero capes will likely be in sight.
