The NFL has informed teams that the supplemental draft will be held electronically next Thursday, July 12. If you’re unfamiliar with the supplemental draft, it’s essentially a separate draft held after the regular draft but before the start of the season. It was designed to allow players who either missed their filing deadline to enter the NFL draft, or those who were ineligible for off the field issues (such as academic or disciplinary concerns). Unlike the regular draft, it’s held via email. Teams submit a ‘bid’ for a player they are interested in, equivalent to the round they would draft the player in. Whoever submits the highest bid wins the rights to the player, but loses a draft pick in the following year.
Supplemental Draft Date Set For Thursday July 12
The most recent example was Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor. In last year's supplemental draft, the Raiders bid a 3rd round pick for Pryor. That was the highest bid, so the Raiders were awarded Pryor, but forfeited their third round pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
Their are eight players eligible for the supplemental draft this year; Boise State defensive back Quaylon Ewing, Utah wide receiver Josh Gordon, Syracuse running back Adam Harris, Iowa State offensive tackle Adrian Haughton, Carson-Newman linebacker Larry Lumpkin, Georgia defensive end Montez Robinson, McMurray wide receiver Houston Tuminello and TCU running back Ed Wesley.
The biggest name among that group according to NFL.com's report is receiver Josh Gordon. The 6'4", 220lbs Gordon played with Robert Griffin III and Kendall Wright at Baylor in 2010 before being suspended for a drugs arrest. He transferred to Utah and was forced to sit out the year due to transfer rules, but has a skill set to work with and develop.
Be sure to check back later on for Dan’s thoughts on some of these prospects.
