Mets Reportedly Interested In Bringing K-Rod Back

The Mets could be reaching into their past to help their bullpen’s future. Weird? Yes, but also logical.

Francisco Rodriguez was once a New York Met. He signed a big free-agent deal with the team in 2009 after setting the single-season saves record with the Angels in 2008.

It didn't work out. Rodriguez -- better known as K-Rod -- wound up getting arrested after a fracas in the Mets' clubhouse, and was exiled to the Brewers, where he helped them to the postseason in 2011 as an expensive setup man.

Now, the tables might have turned. Milwaukee’s having a tough year and could be a seller; the Mets are hanging around near the top of the NL East and Ken Davidoff says the Mets could be interested in bringing K-Rod back to New York:

The Mets want to upgrade their bullpen, and the Brewers’ Francisco Rodriguez is on their list of targets, a person familiar with the club’s thinking said yesterday.
It’s not a crazy idea at all. In fact, you could make a strong case Rodriguez is the best of all bullpen trade possibilities out there for the Mets.

It certainly would get the New York baseball writers clucking, that's for sure. But Davidoff is right -- with Mets closer Frank Francisco on the DL, they're looking for bullpen help. The Mets begin Tuesday just 3½ games out of first place in the NL East and just half a game out of the wild-card lead.

There have been worse trade ideas.
