In a surprising turn of events, Watkins Glen International will not have a title sponsor for this years NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at the Glen.

Watkins Glen International president Michael Printup told Dave Buchanan of WGR 550 that it was extremely hard to find a replacement sponsor for the event.

”You’re always chasing and we chased all year with Heluva Good! walking away. We did have somebody really close but we decided not to pull the trigger, we just couldn’t activate it enough.“Heluva Good! was the primary sponsor of the Sprint Cup Series event since 2009. They decided to pull their sponsorship earlier this year.

With the race now called the Finger Lakes 355 at the Glen, Printup says that a title sponsor this year would have brought a huge capital project to the historic road course that would’ve included a track repave. That plan has now been tossed for now.

If you want to hear more of what WGI President Michael Printup had to say about getting a title sponsor, go to the link above. Its a great interview.

Its a really bummer that the track could not acquire a title sponsor for this years Sprint Cup Series race. Unfortunately, with the tough economic times we are going through, its important now more than ever to have a title sponsor for a Sprint Cup series race. Not only does it give sponsors the publicity they need/want, but it also gives the tracks lots of money.

With Watkins Glen not getting any money from a title sponsor, they will be holding off on their capital project, which is a drag.
