Braves’ Jonny Venters Hits DL With Elbow Injury

The Atlanta reliever has been hit hard in recent weeks, and it appears an injury might be the cause.

Atlanta Braves lefthander Jonny Venters was one of the top middle relievers in the major leagues in both 2010 and 2011; he led the NL in appearances in 2011 with 85.

That workload has apparently caught up with Venters, as he’s been getting hit hard since late May: a 5.84 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in his last 22 appearances (17 innings pitched), with five home runs allowed. And now we know an injury is involved:

Avilan is a 22-year-old lefthander who has posted a 3.23 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 16 appearances (12 starts) for Triple-A Gwinnett; he'll be making his major-league debut when he first steps onto the mound for the Braves. The Braves could use the help, too; since June 22 they've lost seven of 11 and fallen six games behind the NL East-leading Nationals.
