Giancarlo Stanton Won’t Play Friday, All-Star Status Uncertain

The 22-year-old Marlins slugger hasn’t played in four days due to some issues with his right knee.

Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins was one of the hitters chosen for the Home Run Derby in the upcoming All-Star Week festivities, and he's also the Marlins' only representative for the All-Star Game.

Stanton has been bothered with knee troubles and hasn’t played since Monday. He won’t play Friday, either. Clark Spencer:

Even though Ozzie Guillen said Stanton won’t play Friday, Stanton is scheduled to test his right knee by taking part in the usual pregame rituals, such as batting practice and shagging in the outfield.
“[Friday’s] the test,” Stanton said.
If Stanton and trainers deem the knee good to go, he’ll try playing Saturday and Sunday. But Stanton said if he doesn’t play in both of those two games for the Marlins, he doesn’t see how he could take part in All-Star festivities. There’s even a possibility that Stanton could have arthroscopic surgery on the knee for what’s being termed:

a “loose body” of either bone or cartilage about six millimeters in size. It’s not clear whether another Marlins player would be named if Stanton can’t go to Kansas City for All-Star week, but fans of the booming home runs he hits would be disappointed if Stanton can’t participate in the Home Run Derby.
