Tottenham Hotspur knew they desperately needed to sign a center back this summer and now they have one. Ajax's Jan Vertonghen will be making the move to White Hart Lane this summer, joining Spurs for just under £10 million.

The 25-year-old Vertonghen was one of the most sought-after center backs on the market this summer, drawing interest from a host of clubs, including Spurs' rivals Arsenal. He had been linked to both North London clubs for several months, but Spurs do not have the money of Arsenal, nor can they offer Champions League football. So despite being able to offer near-guaranteed playing time and all of the indications that he would head to White Hart Lane, there were doubts that Tottenham would be able to get their guy.

With Vertonghen in the fold, Spurs can finally have some confidence in their defense. Younes Kaboul played fantastically for Spurs last season, but with Ledley King retiring, William Gallas aging and Michael Dawson often injured, they are desperate for a second dependable centerback. They believe that Vertonghen can be that man and help them in their quest to return to the Champions League.

Vertonghen had been one of the Eredivisie’s top defenders for several years and helped Ajax win back-to-back league titles, but it was his play in the Europa League round of 16 against Manchester United that really upped the interest in the Belgian international. Vertonghen is a starting central defender, alongside Vincent Kompany, for Belgium.
