A’s OF Yoenis Cespedes Injures Thumb

Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes left Sunday’s game with a left thumb sprain, another in a series of injuries he’s had this year.

Yoenis Cespedes, the (now) oft-injured Cuban import for the Oakland Athletics, left Sunday afternoon's game with an apparent left thumb sprain, the team announced. Cespedes apparently injured the thumb while stealing second base in the first inning, according to CSN Bay Area writer Casey Pratt, but stayed in the game for two more innings, including a groundout in another plate appearance. He even went into the clubhouse to have his wrist re-taped at one point, Pratt said.

None of the treatments worked, and he was yanked before the fourth inning. There’s no word yet on the severity of the injury, but A’s fans have grown somewhat accustomed to his talents not appearing in the lineup. He spent three weeks on the disabled list in May, and missed nine out of 10 games at one point in June. He will have the All-Star Break to rest up and try not to miss any more time, but this is already becoming a dismaying trend.
