The 2012 Supplemental Draft takes place on Thursday, and much of the buzz is centered on former Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon.
Supplemental Draft: Broncos, Cowboys show interest in LB Larry Lumpkin
But some of the lesser-known of the eight prospects in this year's draft are generating some buzz. Namely, former Alabama A&M's Larry Lumpkin. Scouts from the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos have checked in with A&M offensive coordinator Cedric Pearl, the teams' NFL liaison. From the Huntsville Register:
"They’re interested in Larry," Pearl told Reggie Benson of The Huntsville Times. "They’ve seen him on film. They know what he can do. They’re trying to get information on his background."
In digging into Lumpkin’s background, teams will find that Lumpkin played two seasons at A&M before transferring to Carson-Newman College. He entered the Supplemental Draft after being ruled ineligible for this season.
In 2010, Lumpkin had 39 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, four sacks, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles. He has solid size at 6-foot, 234 pounds. But A&M’s inside linebacker coach Jay Martin has the money quote:
“Larry was a playmaker for us, but he had a lot of issues,” Martin said. “He was constantly late for meetings and he would miss practice at least one day a week. He was very undisciplined. He would have helped us, but he didn’t want to be here.”
It will be a shock if a draft pick is used on Lumpkin. In fact, it could be a surprise to see him even brought in on a tryout basis.
