Chad Johnson was arrested Saturday night for domestic violence, allegedly after headbutting his wife, Evelyn Lozada. That doesn’t jibe with the Johnson many know from his touchdown dances and lively Twitter account -- but his May 8 joke on Twitter about domestic violence doesn’t seem funny now.

While public figures’ public statements on Twitter can be unserious jokes, and Johnson’s often are, making domestic violence a topic for humor is an iffy choice at best for professional comedians, much less the garden-variety celebrity. And this tweet is definitely going to be used against Johnson in the court of public opinion.
The joke was popular, retweeted by 420 Twitter users and favorited by almost 100, and Jockular snagged an image of it should it eventually get deleted.
Johnson spent the 2011 NFL season as an ineffective receiver with the New England Patriots, and signed with the Miami Dolphins in June.
The popular HBO reality series Hard Knocks is profiling the Dolphins this offseason. It seems likely that Johnson’s arrest will be covered in this week’s new episode, coming Tuesday.
