UCLA Linebacker Patrick Larimore Medically Retires

UCLA senior linebacker Patrick Larimore decides to call it a career after sustaining his second concussion in a six-month span.

Senior Bruin linebacker Patrick Larimore left Sunday night's practice early and announced that he was medically retiring following his second concussion in a six-month span, according to Miguel Melendez of the LA Daily News.

Larimore’s second concussion, which he sustained near the conclusion of spring camp, was originally misdiagnosed as heat exhaustion before doctors discovered the true extent. It was still uncertain when Larimore would return to practice before his fellow players were informed of the shocking news during a team meeting.

Larimore’s retirement is UCLA’s second for medical reasons in the past week alone. Junior offensive lineman Chris Ward also decided to hang up his cleats once his back and knee injuries became too much to manage.

Larimore, a team captain in 2011, started all 13 games for the Bruins last year and earned the honor of being UCLA's defensive player of the year following his 81-tackle campaign, in which he also tallied a sack and an interception. Redshirt junior Todd Golper looks to be next in line at Larimore's position after being listed behind the 6-foot-2 redshirt senior on the initial post-spring depth chart.
