Jeff Mathis Signs 2-Year Extension With Blue Jays

The Blue Jays signed Jeff Mathis to a two-year, $3 million extension on Tuesday. The team has an option on the third year.

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed catcher Jeff Mathis to a two-year extension worth $3 million. The team also has an option on the third year in 2013 for $1.5 million.

Mathis, 29, is in his first season with Toronto, hitting .215/.252/.415 this season with six home runs, nine doubles, seven walks and 19 RBI in 46 games. Mathis has also thrown out 39 percent of the attempted stolen bases against him this season.

For his eight-year career, Mathis hits .196/.256/.312 with 32 homers, 57 doubles, 102 walks and 158 RBI in 472 games. His percentage of throwing out attempted stolen bases is up 14 percent this season over his career average of 25 percent. Mathis was with the Los Angeles Angels for the first seven seasons of his career.
