The St. Louis Rams have demoted former No. 2 overall pick Jason Smith to the second team, according to the St. Louis Rams Dispatch.

This offseason, the Rams brought in Barry Richardson to add some depth, but it appears he could be the team's starting right tackle after outplaying Smith throughout training camp.

Smith now faces an uphill battle to live up to the billing of a second overall pick. He has struggled through injuries and inconsistent play throughout his three year NFL career.

The former Baylor standout was drafted behind only Matthew Stafford in the 2009 draft, and the Rams passed up on more successful tackles Michael Oher and Eugene Monroe to take him so high. He was considered a high upside player due to his athleticism. Three years later, the Rams' offensive line is still in shambles. Sam Bradford, the team's No. 1 overall pick in 2010, has struggled with injury as a result.
