Less than a calendar year ago, Tyrann Mathieu was in New York City as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. This fall, instead of playing what would have been his junior year at LSU, Mathieu will stay in dug rehab, according to Jennifer Hale of Fox Sports.
Tyrann Mathieu will stay in drug rehab this fall, won’t play football

Mathieu was dismissed from the team last Friday, and many expected him to drop down a level to be eligible to play in 2012. Instead, he’ll be staying in Houston to clean himself up, while being mentored by former NBA player John Lucas.
Obviously, Mathieu’s draft stock took a hit the day he was dismissed from LSU. It seems unlikely that he’ll skip a year of football and enter the 2013 NFL Draft. He wouldn’t have a chance to prove himself.
This is a smart move for Tyrann Mathieu the person. He needs to get his head right to have a chance at long term success. If he sits out the year and gets himself back on track mentally, Mathieu will have a chance to come out and impress some people in the fall of 2013 to rebuild his draft stock.
Mathieu certainly has a long road ahead of him.
