Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Ray Willis has called it a career in the NFL and announced his retirement, the Chiefs announced on Friday. The announcement comes less than three weeks after Willis was signed to fill the void left by Tony Ugoh's retirement earlier in training camp. Ugoh's surprising retirement came just four days after he signed with the Chiefs on July 26.
Ray Willis Retires From NFL
After offensive tackle Tony Ugoh surprisingly retired after four days with the Chiefs, his replacement, Ray Willis, has also announced his retirement after a short stint with the team.
According to Joel Thorman of Chiefs blog, Arrowhead Pride, Willis likely wasn't going to play much of a role in the Chiefs offense anyway, but the retirement does leave the team thin among offensive tackles. Brandon Albert and Eric Winston are essentially set as the starting tackles with the backup spot led by Donald Stephenson.
Willis was a fourth round selection of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2005 NFL Draft and played in six seasons with the team. He then had short stints with the Dolphins, Saints, Jets and, finally, the Chiefs before calling it quits.
The Chiefs have yet to fill the open roster spot left by the retirement.
