In what has been a frustrating year for San Diego Padres starter Tim Stauffer, the team reports that he is experiencing additional pain in his pitching shoulder as well as a setback with his nagging elbow injury, and may need to be shut down.

The Padres are not sure if Stauffer will return to the big leagues this year and have not officially decided on what they will do with him, per manager Bud Black:

“This is a tough one based on what time of the year it is and the couple times he’s tried to come back and it hasn’t worked out.”

Stauffer made one major league start on May 14 after starting the season on the DL, and has been back on it ever since. He also made one rehab start with Triple-A Tucson this week and was scheduled to make one more before returning to the major leagues, but the elbow pain and shoulder soreness cropped up again during some work in between.
