Detroit Lions safety Louis Delmas is likely out for the remainder of the preseason after undergoing knee surgery two weeks ago, according to Anwar Richardson of MLive.com.

The surgery, which was performed by Dr. James Andrews, was necessary to aid Delmas’ recovery from knee soreness which had hindered him since early in training camp. Head coach Jim Schwartz is pessimistic about Delmas’ immediate return, but remains hopeful that he will be ready for the start of the regular season on September 9th, saying:

“A lot of those other guys are day-to-day as they come out. He’s week-to-week...The idea was let’s try to do (the surgery) as quick as we can so that it gives us enough time before the opener. That’s what it’s looking like.”

Delmas was the Lions’ second round pick in 2009. He played in only 11 games last season and has missed seven games over the span of his three year career.
