In 2010 and 11, the Colorado Rockies' Jhoulys Chacin looked like one of the better young pitchers in the National League. Equipped with one of the game's best sinkers, Chacin posted a 3.48 ERA in 331 innings over those seasons.

His 2012 hasn’t gone nearly as well. Before going on the Disabled List with a pectoral injury in early May, Chacin went winless in five starts and racked up a 7.30 ERA.

Tuesday night, he will finally return to the Rockies’ rotation. Troy Renck:

Chacin, out since May with a right pectoral issue, has shown steady improvement on his rehab assignment, maintaining consistent velocity and getting groundball outs. He worked seven innings on Thursday in an 11-2 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes, the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate. Chacin allowed one run on five hits with three walks. He threw 91 pitches, 55 for strikes. He recorded nine groundball outs.

It’s been a long road back for Chacin, who actually struggled badly in a few of his minor-league rehab outings. But the Rockies presumably wouldn’t be bringing him back if he weren’t back to full strength, or close. It’s not like they need him for a pennant race or anything.

Chacin will join the Rockies’ experimental four-man rotation and, like his rotation-mates, will be on a loose 75-pitch limit in each start.
