Cleveland Indians pitcher Josh Tomlin will undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced on Tuesday night. Tomlin was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 14 with "elbow inflammation," but the injury is worse than the team initially believed.

The bright side for Cleveland is that the injury may shed some light on why Tomlin was having such a poor 2012. After putting up career numbers across the board in 2011, Tomlin had posted a 6.36 ERA in 103.1 innings so far this season. Along with his ERA, his WHIP, batting average against and walk rate had all skyrocketed in his 21 appearances (16 starts) in 2012.

The Indians also announced that perpetually injured outfielder Grady Sizemore will not play in 2012. Sizemore re-signed with the Indians last offseason on a deal that tied much of his salary to his health and production, but he has been unable to recover from offseason back and knee surgery.
